Our mission is to help break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy in the Hayward Community by supporting the Literacy Plus Program for adults and Children.

    ABOUT HAYWARD LITERACY PLUS COUNCIL

We are Hayward Literacy Plus Council. Our commitment is beyond charity and into the communities that we serve.

Literacy Plus Council Members help the Literacy Plus Program of the Hayward Public Library and its staff in recruiting tutors and learners by spreading awareness of the Program and encouraging support of the community through fundraising and community outreach.

The Literacy Plus Program is a nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation that was initiated by the staff of the Hayward Public Library in 1985. It is dedicated to improving the literacy skills of the Hayward community. The early Program focused
on illiterate adults, but other services for children have been
added, as tutors and staff became

available and as other literacy needs have been assessed.

Through the work of Council members, the Hayward Literacy Plus Program was granted 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit organization, allowing it to qualify for grants.

Since 1986, trained tutors have helped over 3000 adults improve their basic skills. Currently, about 300 adults are tutored each year.
