The Literacy Plus Program was created using two basic assumptions:
• Learning, particularly reading competency, is best achieved by one-on-one contact between the learner and the tutor.
• A compatible working relationship between the tutor and the learner is essential to the learning process.
In recognition of these assumptions, each learner is
assigned with one volunteer tutor. Care is given to pairing tutors and
learners to assure a positive working relationship.
Since 1986, trained tutors have
helped over 3000 adults improve their basic skills. Currently, about 300 adults are tutored each year.
